The Canadian Composer Spotlight

7:30 PM on October 2, 2016
at the Broadway Theatre

This concert features a suite of music written and arranged by the legendary Ron Paley and a special guest appearance by Saskatoon's own singer extraordinaire, Elly Thorn.

The Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra is back with another evening of great big band music with a spotlight on Canadian composers—featuring Western Canada’s own Ron Paley and Saskatchewan vocalist Elly Thorn.

Pianist/bassist Ron Paley formed the Ron Paley Big Band in 1976 after playing bass with the big bands of Buddy Rich, and Woody Herman, with whom he recorded two albums. His big band has performed in concert with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. It has recorded 3 CDs, the latest containing music for the big band musical “Bring ‘Em Back!”.

Hailing from the East Central Saskatchewan community of Saltcoats, Elly Thorn is a Canadian singer-songwriter, who lives to perform. Typical of rural life, Thorn took music lessons and began her music career as a teenager with the touring musical revue, Saskatchewan Express. Elly was also selected to study at the prestigious Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, B.C. She honed her musical talents aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines and has landed several acting roles including the TV series, Rabbit Fall (2006) and Corner Gas (2009), and also performed with Persephone Theatre in Evita and Toon Town.

With three albums to her credit she is proud to include original songs such as: Dear John, Twelve Thirty Four, and so it is. Sweet Millie is the first release from her latest offering. This self-penned track is a great way to break the ice with radio, an easy name to remember and a voice you won’t forget.
