Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra presents: Thank you Kinda Blue: Reimagining Kind of Blue

From March 2 and April 22, 1959, at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City, a young Miles Davis gathered some of the biggest names in jazz to record what many regard as one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time, Kind of Blue. The album was one of fifty recordings chosen in 2002 by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry, and in 2003 it was ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

One simply needs to experience the album to understand its artistic importance and significance. The original recordings improvisational artistry and mastery has endured the test of time in ways that makes 2019, the 60th anniversary of the original LP release, an important historical milestone to recognize, celebrate, and build upon.

The Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra, using the large jazz ensemble idiom, is proud to celebrate this landmark recording in a very special one of a kind project that re-imagines the music from the iconic Kind of Blue recording.

Contributing Canadian composers/arrangers including Juno award winners David Braid and Christine Jenson, along with the talents of Paul Suchan, Jeff Presslaff, Dean McNeill, Richard Gillis, and Andrew Homzy have collectively developed a concert program that artistically blends elements of the original compositions with modern jazz sensibilities and aesthetics.
